​Ernest Lee Marshall, age 72, of Virginia Beach, Virginia joined his Lord’s team of Arch-Angels on Thursday, February 21, 2024. Born in Roxboro, North Carolina, he grew up in Portsmouth’s Cavalier Manor in Virginia.

Ernest was preceded in death by his parents Octavia and Ernest Marshall, Sr.

He is survived by his aunt Jennie White; uncle Walter Tapp; cousins: Charles “CT” Paylor (Helena), Lavagetto “Poochie” Paylor, Rhoal Tapp (Paulette), Nathan Pulliam (Zelia), Jay Pulliam (Sandra), Helen Young (Bernard), Lynette Kennedy (Edward), Juanita Browder, Rikona Kirby, Angelina Kirby, Shelia Samuel (Raymond), Michelle Roseman (Kyle), Deborah Porterfield and A.J. Porterfield, Jr.; and his dear friend Sharon Cheeks.

Ernest attended Portsmouth Catholic High School. After obtaining a Health and Physical Education degree from Virginia State University, he was employed as an instructor and coach at Manor High School. As an assistant basketball coach and head junior varsity coach of the Manor Mustangs, he helped head coach Cliff Black establish a competitive prep program in the Southeastern District. Later, he worked with disadvantaged youth as a counselor before retiring as a contract instructor with the United States Government. An avid sportsman, he loved participating in tennis activities and playing and being a student of basketball.

  Ernest was A compassionate and dedicated member of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Norfolk and attended St. Mary’s Academy.

He was meticulous and had his own inimitable style. Ernest will be missed by his surrogate sister Janice Davis, his sports brothers William Keeling and Glen Mason and a host of friends and parish family. He is dearly loved by a bevy of nieces, nephews, and cousins who adored him.
