Ms. Anita Carol Cates, age 46, departed this life and entered eternal rest on Monday, March 4, 2024 at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. She was born in Durham County on May 21, 1977 to Bonnie Jean Bumpass Cates and the late Walter Cates, Jr.
She was a devoted member of Greater Cleggs Chapel Community Missionary Baptist Church in Timberlake, North Carolina. She graduated from Piedmont Community College in 2008 with an Associate in Arts. In May of 2012, Anita graduated cum laude from North Carolina Central University with her Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Development and Education.
Anita was preceded in death by her father, Walter Cates Jr.; grandparents Flora Bumpass Clayton and Jr. Clayton; and dear former friend and husband, Clay Thorpe.
Anita leaves to cherish precious memories, her daughters: Cierra Thorpe (Calvin) of Greensboro, North Carolina; Ayanna Thorpe-Nelson (Trenton) of Greensboro, North Carolina; Yakira Thorpe (Da’querrien) of Hillsborough, North Carolina; a granddaughter, Ya’Vani Dunn; mother Bonnie Jean Bumpass Cates; sisters Karen Cates, Beverly Cates, Sandra Cates, and Jennifer Cates, all of Roxboro, North Carolina; aunts Barbara Harris of Fayetteville, North Carolina; Bobbie Herbin of Rougemont, North Carolina; Gladys Newman of Durham, North Carolina; Queen Clayton of Timberlake, North Carolina; Virginia Cates of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Jackie Hamlett Whitaker (husband Myron) of Roxboro, North Carolina; Mary Ann Pickett of Chesapeake, Virginia; and Jennifer Cates; one uncle Wally Torian (wife Karen) of New Jersey; and numerous loving nieces, nephews, additional relatives and friends.
