HESTER, WHITTED & DAYE FUNERAL SERVICE
She taught. She learned. She loved. Four children. One grandchild. Countless friends. Too many people touched to name. For 97 years, Christine Virginia Arrington Clayton Pope, graced this earth - as a wife,  mother, schoolteacher, church member and  staunch civil rights advocate.  She entered eternal rest on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at her residence in Roxboro, North Carolina.

Christine was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina to the union of the late Willis Matthew Arrington and the late Tempe Pierce Arrington.

She was such a sweet, tough cookie. Being married to a physician in a small town will do that to you. Being a schoolteacher in a small town will reinforce that. Having four children in five years will make you call on the Lord.

She drove her girls to Durham every Saturday for piano lessons. She always had dinner ready for her son, upon his arrival home from tennis lessons and matches.

Christine was a Bennett Belle, having graduated from Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina. She was an Episcopalian, growing up in the church in Rocky Mount, North Carolina and later joining St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Roxboro.

“Mrs. Clayton” taught Earth Science for decades – walking from her home to her nearby school each day. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the Entre Nous Club, both of which she served as President.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Dewey Monroe Clayton, III and daughter Dr. Christy Lou Clayton.

She leaves to cherish special memories her daughters: Dawn Maria Clayton and Cassandra Laverne Clayton; son Dewey Monroe Clayton IV; granddaughter Kristen Elyse Clayton White; sister Lucy Wynn; and many loving relatives and friends.

She lived an abundant life, now come to a close. May she smile down on us as we remember her – as we smile upward to the Heavens, as we smile upward to her. Christine Virginia Arrington Clayton Pope. Wife, mother, teacher, friend. We were blessed to have had her in our lives, as long as we lovingly did.
